Configuring local printing

The local printing feature enables you to print Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central documents from on-premises printers via your local computer, without having to interact with the browser's print dialog.

Printing from the Business Central web client can feel cumbersome, especially if you're used to the Role Tailored Client or an internally hosted service tier, both of which offer direct printer access. The Continia Document Output Service helps bridge that gap, making printing from the web client just as seamless.

When enabled, local printing lets you print directly from your local printers through direct communication between the web client and the Document Output Service. Note that the service must be installed and have local printing enabled on each computer that you intend to print from. You can only access printers that are installed on your own computer – printers on other users' computers are inaccessible to you, even if they have the service installed and local printing enabled.

Tip

If you prefer not to install the Document Output Service on every computer, consider using the print server feature instead, as this connects to the Document Output print queue and pulls print jobs directly from there.

To configure local printing

When the Document Output Service has been successfully installed, you can start configuring its different features, including local printing.

To set up local printing, follow these steps:

  1. Follow the guide in Configuring the Document Output Service to enter the Service Manager setup.
  2. On the Local printing tab, make sure that Enable local printing is selected.
  3. Under Port, specify the port. The port must be the same as the one specified in the Document Output Setup in Business Central.

    Note

The default port is 9225. Keep this port unless it’s being used by another service.
